Padmasri Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao



Padmasri Ghantasala, a brilliant playback singer and music composer of Indian film , known for his works predominanatly in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada & Malayalam, Tulu and Hindi language films. His most majestic voice for which he is referred to as the "Gaana Gandharva" helped Telugu film music develop its own distinct character which remains unparalleled. Sri Ghantasala perfomed in United States, Germany, England and for the United Nations Organizations.

The government of Andhra Pradesh marked the occasion of 25 years of his film career as Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Ghantasala in Hyderabad on 1 February 1970. He was the most prolific film composer and playback singer in Telugu cinema until the mid-1970s. He composed music for many popular Telugu movies, and also for popular Tamil and Kannada films in the 1950s and 1960s. Ghantasala served as the court musician for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. He recorded private albums, including Bhagawad Gita, Patriotic Songs, Padyalu—a unique genre of Telugu. In 1970, he received the Padma Shri award, India's fourth highest civilian award for his remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.

The Indian government released a postage stamp and first day cover to celebrate Ghantasala's work on 11 February 2003. He is the first movie singer-composer of the south to be accorded this honour. Dr.Sharathchandra, North American Telugu Society (NATS) in collaboration with Telugu Literary and Cultural Association (TLCA) in New York, released a postal stamp on Ghantasala on 6 October 2014. He won the best playback singer award in Andhra Pradesh every year for nearly 30 years, a feat unachieved by any other playback singer





Padmasree Ghantasala's unprecedented musical heritage and the resplendence of Telugu language and literature had ignited a deep seated passion in Dr. Sharathchandra towards this great music and firmly decided to cascade the music splendour and literary heritage to the present and coming generations by imparting professional training to the music lovers of all age categories.

Coming from a strong musical background , Sharathchandra holds a highest degree of perfection in classical & semi classical music genres. He stands unique amongst his contemporaries for his brilliant capability in identification and elucidation of any raga and its characteristics associated

with a song or a poem. His brilliant compositions won critics applause and he is undoubtedly the most sought after musician of Ghantasala's Telugu Music.

A true aficionado of Sri Ghantasala, Sharathchandra laid foundation to a unique music college and arts centre through his innovative approach which are intended to train the artists following professional standards and also offering them a platform to showcase their art.

Dr. Sharathchandra who had performed on several national and International diases, is honoured with several titles, top of which, where he is dearly addressed as “Apara Ghantasala” . He spearheaded many events and programs like ‘Ghantasala Swara Jaitra Yatra", "Padyaniki Pathhabhisekam", "Telugu Bhashaku Varam Ghantasala Swaram" , all of which directed to promote and encourage music & literature of Telugu language and gladden every music loving heart.

Drawn by the principles of Swami Vivekananda, Sharathchandra designed and implemented various social service projects and have been seamlessly working on the rural youth and women empowerment activities to educate the masses and provide a means of livelihood to the downtrodden.
